The term "Bandog" ( "Bandogge") came about in 1250-1300-ies in Central England and meant mastiff-like powerful dog that lived on band in daytime and was released at night to protect the territory.

Johannes Caius, in his book, refers to the Bandog, as a huge single-minded, dangerous, extremely active and ruthless angry dog. "Bandogge is suitable for scaring foxes and badgers at pastures, and looking after the cattle in the meadows and pastures, and in some cases it can bite the bull by the ear, if needed." First Bandogs were probably involved in the Crusades, and fought with bulls.
