History of the Breed
 
The history of the breed Mastino Napolitano goes to back centuries. Apparently, in Europe these dogs were spread by the Phoenicians who brought them with other products in their ships. Even in ancient Rome these dogs were involved in the battle with the soldiers. In the Roman Empire dogs were used in the arenas to chase wild animals. Moreover, at that time these huge dogs were kept as guard dogs not only by rich people, but also by farmers. Much later, in the Middle Age in Italy, the Neapolitan Mastiff continued to exist in different parts of the country. In Naples under Spanish rule, these dogs were mixed with Iberian Mastiff. Thus, the purity of the breed has been lost. After World War II, the Neapolitan Mastiff breed became threatened. A dog lover and journalist Pietro Skontsane decided to regenerate the race. He collected throughout Italy a few individuals, who preserved the purity of blood, and made them mate in his nursery. Pietro had got good external qualities of dogs. In 1949, the first criteria of the breed Mastino Napolitano has been created.
 
Characteristics of the Neapolitan Mastiff Breed
 
A big strong guard dog with short limbs. Mastino's head is massive, covered with loose skin with wrinkles and folds. The eyes are deeply laid, are suitable for coat color. The grip is of pinch or scissors type. The ears are flat, stuck to the cheeks, not cropped today. The neck is strong, the chest is broad. The tail is thick, docked to 1/3 its length. Hips are bent forward at a 60 degree angle. Height 65 to 75 cm, weight 60 to 70 kg, the larger weight is allowed.
His coat can take different shades of grey, leaden grey and

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a watchdog. He is really nice. He loves outdoor games. Mastino knows all friends of the master, but if the family is not at home, the dog can allow a friend into the house, but will not let him leave until his master comes. It requires consistent training. Mastino attacks when the master is facing a real threat. According to the owners, it is a loyal friend and a dog faithful to infinity.
